Fabiola, or the Church of the CatacombsFree EPUB and PDF
Why read it
For young and adult readers who want to know how the first Christians lived and died: Wiseman, a great archaeologist of the catacombs, blends fiction with history and the acts of the martyrs. It shows powerfully that Christian charity was something new in the ancient world. Some learned passages are slow, but its scenes of martyrdom and conversion are unforgettable.
Summary
Rome, AD 302, on the eve of Diocletian's great persecution. Fabiola, a young patrician, rich, cultured and proud, despises the Christians without knowing them, while around her the girl Agnes, the soldier Sebastian and the youth Pancratius live their faith in secret. Through her friendship with them and her meeting with a blind slave girl, Fabiola discovers the charity, forgiveness and faith that lead them to give their lives. The novel moves through the catacombs, the courts and the amphitheatre, with the Roman martyrs as its heroes.
