Why read it
For anyone who enjoys a serious argument told with humour and without rancour, and who suspects that believing or not believing really matters. Chesterton gives each side its best arguments. It reads almost in one breath.
Summary
Evan MacIan, a Catholic Highlander, and Turnbull, an atheist journalist, agree to fight a duel over a quarrel about God, and the police and public opinion keep stopping them. Hunted across England, they discover that they respect each other more than the lukewarm people around them. It is an adventure novel and, at the same time, a debate about faith and freedom with a sword fight in the middle.
Quotes
Man is a contradiction in terms; he is a beast whose superiority to other beasts consists in having fallen.
I would fight for my friend, but if I lost my friend, I should still be there. I would fight for my country, but if I lost my country, I should still exist.
If a man must not fight for this, may he fight for anything?
It is a monstrous thing, for which men die.
