Why read it

For the reader who wants to laugh and think at once, and for anyone fond of their neighbourhood, city or village. It is one of Chesterton's lightest works and also one of his most imaginative. It leaves you wanting to look at your own street with new eyes.

Summary

In a dull future London, a joking civil servant is chosen king by chance and, for fun, gives every borough a medieval banner and halberd. Only one young man, Adam Wayne, takes the joke seriously and defends his street as if it were a homeland. It is a comic fantasy about patriotism, humour and the importance of loving what is small.

Quotes

Humour, my friends, is the one sanctity remaining to mankind. It is the one thing you are thoroughly afraid of.
But whatever is touched with it is never again wholly common; whatever is touched with it takes a magic from outside the world.
the patriot never under any circumstances boasts of the largeness of his country, but always, and of necessity, boasts of the smallness of it.
