Why read it

For readers who already know Father Brown and want more, and for newcomers who lose nothing by starting here, since every story stands alone. There is humour, irony at the expense of experts without common sense, and a compassion rare in detective fiction. It can be enjoyed at any age.

Summary

A second collection of Father Brown cases: a gang of thieves in the Italian Alps, a duel that never takes place, a murderer who does not exist, an old family curse. With his umbrella and his air of understanding nothing, the little priest takes each riddle apart from the inside, showing that evil is rarely as mysterious as it looks and that sound reason finds what pompous science misses.

Quotes

“One is never thinking of the real sorrow,” said the strange priest. “One can only be kind when it comes.”
Even in a minute instance, it is best to look first to the main tendencies of Nature. A particular flower may not be dead in early winter, but the flowers are dying; a particular pebble may never be wetted with the tide, but the tide is coming in.
If God Almighty held the truncheon of the lists, if St Michael blew the trumpet for the swords to cross--even then, if one of them stood ready, the other would not come.
