Why read it

For anyone who enjoys a good mystery and would like the detective to have a soul as well. The stories are short, brisk and end with a surprise, so they suit an afternoon or one a night before sleep. Chesterton teaches the reader to look with humility at what seems obvious.

Summary

Twelve stories in which a short, absent-minded priest, Father Brown, solves crimes that baffle the police of London and Paris. He needs no fingerprints or gadgets: he reads the human heart, because he knows what a man is capable of and why. Every case brings a paradox and a stroke of wit, and behind them the plain faith of someone who has heard a great many confessions.

Quotes

The criminal is the creative artist; the detective only the critic
Reason and justice grip the remotest and the loneliest star.
Where does a wise man hide a leaf? In the forest. But what does he do if there is no forest?
