Saint John Henry Newman · 1848 · Novels

Why read it

For anyone who seeks the truth with intellectual honesty and wants to see how reason and faith meet in a real life. It is a window onto Newman's own conversion, told with irony about the religious fashions of his day. The theological dialogues ask for attention, but the portrait of a young man who risks everything for the truth moves any reader.

Summary

Charles Reding, son of an Anglican clergyman, goes up to Oxford in the midst of the Oxford Movement. Through conversations with fellow students, tutors and dons of every party, he begins to ask where the true Church is, and his doubts set him against his family, his friends and his own prospects. The novel follows, step by step and with humour and finesse, the intellectual and spiritual path that leads him to become a Catholic. Newman wrote it shortly after his own conversion.
