Why read it
For adult readers who want to think about today's world in the light of faith: written in 1907, it foresees with astonishing accuracy the religion of humanity, euthanasia and the loneliness of believers. Joseph Ratzinger cited it in 1992, before becoming Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis recommended it more than once. Its tone is grave and its ending apocalyptic, but it leaves a firm hope.
Summary
Early in the twenty-first century a godless humanitarianism rules the world: euthanasia is routine, the Church is cornered, and Europe, America and the East are heading for war. Then Julian Felsenburgh appears, a charismatic American politician who brings universal peace and is hailed as saviour and then as god. Against him, the young English priest Percy Franklin, whose face is identical to Felsenburgh's, upholds the faith of an ever smaller Church. A novel of anticipation about the Antichrist and the end of time.

Quotes
I am perfectly aware that this is a terribly sensational book
Men do recognise at last that a supernatural Religion involves an absolute authority, and that Private Judgment in matters of faith is nothing else than the beginning of disintegration.

It was, in fact, the Catholic idea with the supernatural left out
Then this world passed, and the glory of it.
