Why read it

The shortest and lightest of Austen's novels, a good one to start with. It suits anyone who loves books and can laugh at themselves: Catherine learns to tell what she reads from what she lives, without losing her innocence or her kindness.

Summary

Catherine Morland, an avid reader of Gothic novels, travels to Bath and then to Northanger Abbey, where her imagination sees mysteries and crimes in every corridor. Reality teaches her to tell fantasy from the real world. An affectionate, funny parody, and a defence of the novel.

Quotes

The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.
I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligible.
Where people wish to attach, they should always be ignorant.
To torment and to instruct might sometimes be used as synonymous words.
