The Dream of GerontiusFree EPUB and PDF

Saint John Henry Newman · 1865 · Poetry

Why read it

It is a meditation on death, judgment and purgatory full of hope, written by a saint and Doctor of the Church. It helps one pray for the dead, prepare for one's own death and understand Catholic teaching on what comes after. Its hymns, such as «Praise to the Holiest», are still sung in English-speaking churches.

Summary

A dramatic poem on the death of a Christian and the journey of his soul. Gerontius lies dying, surrounded by friends who pray for him and by the priest who commends him to God; then he wakes, now without his body, in the hands of his Guardian Angel, who leads him to judgment amid the cries of demons and the choirs of angels. After a glimpse of God, the soul itself asks to be taken to purgatory, where it awaits its purification in peace. This edition includes Maurice Francis Egan's introduction and notes.

Quotes

Jesu, Maria--I am near to death, / And Thou art calling me; I know it now--
Firmly I believe and truly / God is Three, and God is One; / And I next acknowledge duly / Manhood taken by the Son.

Praise to the Holiest in the height, / And in the depth be praise: / In all His words most wonderful; / Most sure in all His ways!
Take me away, and in the lowest deep / There let me be, / And there in hope the lone night-watches keep, / Told out for me.
