Why read it

For readers who enjoy well-written debate about ideas and want to see how modern thought was argued over more than a century ago. Many of the fashions Chesterton criticizes are still alive under other names, so the book reads almost like current affairs. It is also a good doorway into his style before moving on to his larger works.

Summary

A collection of essays in which Chesterton examines the celebrated thinkers and writers of his day (Kipling, Shaw, Wells, Whistler and others) and argues that the most important thing about a person is his view of the universe. He takes on the fashions of the moment with humour and paradox, and sketches a philosophy of his own that he would develop later in «Orthodoxy».

Quotes

the most practical and important thing about a man is still his view of the universe.
Eternity is the eve of something.
I never look up at the stars without feeling that they are the fires of a schoolboy’s rocket, fixed in their everlasting fall.
