Summary

Socrates' defence before the court of Athens in 399 BC, accused of corrupting the young and of not believing in the city's gods. Plato, who was present, reconstructs it in three speeches: the defence, the proposal of a penalty after the guilty verdict, and the final words after the death sentence. Socrates prefers to die rather than stop seeking the truth and serving what he understands as a divine command. English translation by Benjamin Jowett.

Quotes

The unexamined life is not worth living.
The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways—I to die, and you to live. Which is better God only knows.
